Known for its vibrant spring show, this semi-dwarf, compact shrub produces an abundance of pea-shaped flowers in a bold, bi-color pattern of bright golden-yellow accented with fiery red. Even when not in bloom, its slender, wiry green stems provide unique year-round structural interest and fine texture.

Key Features

  • Vibrant Spring Blooms: Covered in striking yellow-and-red flowers during mid-to-late spring.
  • Compact & Landscape-Friendly: Reaches a manageable size of 1 to 3 feet tall and wide, making it ideal for smaller gardens compared to traditional varieties.
  • Tough & Resilient: Highly drought-tolerant once established, salt-tolerant, and exceptionally deer-resistant.
  • Low Maintenance: Thrives in full sun and dry, infertile, or poor soils where other plants struggle.

Growing & Care Specifications

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 5–8
  • Light Requirement: Full Sun (at least 6 hours of direct light daily for maximum blooming)
  • Soil Requirements: Requires sharply well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil. Dislikes standing water and heavy clay.
  • Pruning: Lightly trim or prune to shape immediately after spring flowering on old wood.

Ideal Uses

  • Mass plantings on banks or slopes for erosion control
  • Container planting for patio displays
  • Accent plants in low-water or xeriscape designs
